So if you dabble in affiliate sales, you might have a money making opportunity by signing up as an affiliate with a few web hosting companies.

There are different types of hosting affiliate programs. Some companies will pay you a lump sum if you refer someone who signs up. Others pay on a residual basis. You can begin making money without taking the time to develop your own product, you don’t have to worry about creating a sales page or concern yourself with accepting credit cards or delivering a product. But before you jump aboard the first affiliate ship you see, do some research. There are two basic types of affiliate programs: standard and residual programs. Most standard programs give you a one-time payment. Each time you make a sale, you receive a payment. No sale, no payment; it is a simple and straight forward arrangement.

Residual programs however, work a little differently. Most residual plans collect payments from customers on an ongoing basis, usually monthly. Examples of this are: monthly web hosting plans and autoresponder payments.

As with standard affiliate products, you collect a payment each time you make a sale for one of these products. The initial payment you receive from the sale is substantially lower than payments on standard affiliate products. However, in addition to your initial payment, you will get an additional commission each time your customer makes a monthly payment for that service or product. And you will continue to receive these payments for as long as that customer remains with the company.

This is the value of residual programs. You can collects payments for years to come. So, if you are looking to add affiliate programs as part of your business plan, consider adding both standard as well as residual programs. By diversifying in this way, you can generate substantial current income and build up a very nice residual income stream.

Only 20 percent of all affiliate marketers make significant amounts of money. There are a number of reasons for this, but there is a method that you can use that will assure you of making money with affiliate programs. That method involves building a list.

Many affiliate merchants provide a short teaser report that is related to their product. In most cases, these reports are brandable and are given away for free to affiliates who request them. Most affiliates have no idea that these free reports are available. Before signing up for an affiliate product, see if they have free teaser reports that you can give away. This is very important to your successful affiliate marketing efforts.

Using your normal advertising methods, pitch the free report instead of the affiliate program itself. In all of your marketing efforts, promote a link to a re-direct page. Do not send interested parties directly to the affiliate’s sales page. On your re-direct page, place a sign in box to capture names and email addresses. As an incentive to sign up, offer the affiliate’s free report that you have rebranded with your information.

After the prospect has signed in, have your autoresponder send them to the affiliate’s sales page. This benefits you in three ways:

You have added another subscriber to your list. And remember, each subscriber is worth about one dollar per month. So even if they don’t buy the affiliate product that you are promoting, you will still make about $12.00 from that individual over the next year.

Second, The visitor has the free ebook that is branded with your information. If the prospect reads the ebook next month and decides to buy at that time, you will still make your money if they use your branded links.

And last, you will make money in the normal way if the prospect buys on his visit to the merchant’s sales page.
