How to Make Money From Affiliate Programs

There are an ever-increasing number of companies and traders using the marketing power of affiliates as a way of promoting their products or services. The way it works is that a company recruits affiliate marketers and provides them with promotional materials they can use on their websites or blogs. Within these materials is a code so that if a visitor clicks on a link and goes to the companies website and buys something, the affiliate will earn a commission.

Many people are making a successful living from affiliate marketing and adopt special techniques to attract visitors to their web site. There is absolutely nothing wrong in this, after all the buyers are looking for the products or services they buy. Often the affiliate marketer will make the online shopping experience better for the customer. They may provide product comparisons to help the buyer decide which kind of a product to buy. They may provide additional specialist information about the product, or enable visitors to give their own product reviews.

One tactic many affiliate marketers employ is niche marketing. This is because it is very difficult for someone working from home to compete against major online retailers. Most people search for their intended purchases use a search engine like Google. When people put in a broad search term then the larger online websites will invariably come up at the top of the results list. Niche marketers will concentrate within a more tightly defined niche. Let me give you an example of what I mean.

Imagine somebody is looking for a fishing rod. A google search for fishing tackle returns over 4.5 million results – that is 4.5 million competing websites. However if you do a search for graphite deep sea fishing rod, the number of returns goes down to less than 15,000 – a mere fraction of the number. So an affiliate marketer would concentrate on specialist fishing tackle rather than the broad range. There is often an added advantage in this. People who search so specifically for something are often passionate about what they are looking for – in this example deep sea fishing – and they are often not looking for the cheapest, but the best and these often have a higher profit margin and a better commission rate.

To continue my example, I did some Internet research and identified Castaway fishing rods as good quality rods. Do a search for Castaway deep sea fishing rods and the number of results on Google reduces to less than 1,900. Now the competition gets easier, but how many people are actually buying these rods on line?

It may not be so many on a daily basis, but the point is that you can set up a specialist website or blog fairly easily and attract those potential buyers. And then you can go to work on other niche markets so that you have a portfolio of websites each steadily bringing in a regular income.

Niche marketing is just one tool available to home affiliate marketers in the very crowded internet marketplace. But it works very well and with such a huge market there are plenty of good niches to exploit.

Setting Up an Affiliate Marketing Business

There are huge differences between setting up an Affiliate Marketing Business with a more traditional business.

First of all, your start up costs are almost zero when compared to the cost of setting up a regular business. No rent to pay, no stock, advertising is much cheaper. Nor decorating or remodelling of premises. In fact, if you want, you can establish a successful affiliate marketing business without spending a penny in running costs.

The only investment you have to make is time. Of course, you will need a computer and Internet connection. If you are reading this, you must have them already, right.

So how do you set up an Affiliate marketing business. First, you need to understand the skills you will need to be successful. These include such diverse talents as:

These are not skill you need before you get going, they are skills you need to be prepared to learn. Here is where the Internet is all powerful and your ultimate guide, google, will help you find the answers.

Next you need an online presence. Somewhere people can go to see the products you are promoting. The best way is still to register your own domain name and get some webhosting. It is fairly easy to set up your own WordPress blog on your own domain. You Tube has loads of videos showing you how to set up a WordPress blog using Fantastico. However if you want to get online for free, look at Squidoo, Blogger or wordpress.org. All of these allow you to set up web pages or blogs for nothing.

Identifying good products is another skill you need to learn. You need to find products that you can promote effectively within what is a highly competitive market place. You also want them to have a relatively high profit margin so that you get the chance of a worthwhile affiliate commission on each sale. Only then do you make money.

Finally you need to be able to get visitors directly to your website, who then click through your affiliate links to buy the products you are promoting.

Fortunately, there has never been a better time to get started with affiliate marketing, even despite the credit crunch. More and more companies are recognising the marketing power of people like you and I to bring them customers, and they are happy to enter into a commercial partnership with you to achieve this.

How to Get Started With Affiliate Marketing

Knowing how to get started with affiliate marketing can help those of you looking to start an online business decide whether affiliate marketing is for you.

Affiliate marketing is a very simple concept. Companies who sell goods and services online will pay you a commission for every buyer you send to their website. The number of companies using affiliate marketing as part of their sales strategy is growing all the time, and the amount of online trade conducted in this way is huge.

Even in these days of economic recession, more and more retailers are turning to affiliate marketing as a way of cutting operating costs, so for this marketplace the trend is still positive.

For the budding online entrepreneur, affiliate marketing as an online business has many advantages:

However, there are other things you need to think about. For example for many of the more obvious products that sell well on the Internet, such as consumer electronics, there is huge competition. This leads to lower profit margins and therefore relatively smaller commissions, and it is harder for your web pages to get seen by the public.

The answer for many affiliate marketers is to concentrate on well defined niche markets with an emphasis on quality products rather than value for money. By concentrating on a niche market, it is easier for the affiliate marketer to get his web page on to the first page of the almighty Google, leading to free, organic, traffic. Opting for higher quality generally means a higher profit margin and therefore a better commission.

It is extremely unlikely that going online and setting up one niche website is going to earn you the sort of online earnings you are looking for. And, while there are things you can do to increase traffic to your site and maximise earnings, the reality is that in order to create significant earnings, you are going to have to set up a large number of web pages covering different niches. This actually takes a lot of work. Unfortunately, many people believe that starting and running a lucrative online Internet business is easy and are not prepared for the amount of work required.

The new affiliate marketer will also need to learn other skills. These include basic search engine optimisation, writing (for web content and things like article marketing), technical skills in order to manipulate web pages and manage web hosting services, and Internet Research in order to develop those skills and keep them up to date.

Yes, affiliate marketing is hard work to start with. However if set up right, each niche website will go on earning an income with little maintenance, meaning that overtime your income will build. Plus you will have the benefit of a lifestyle where you are your own boss, can work when and where you want and never have to commute.
