When starting a new online affiliate business, there are two main mistakes that people make. And making either one of them can mean few if any profits. This in turn, leads to the marketer abandoning the business and claims that you can’t make money online. But nothing could be further from the truth. You can make money online using affiliate programs if you do it right.

One of the major mistakes that people make is in the selection of which products they promote. Many newbies will choose products based on the commission that they pay. They seek out products that pay 75% or more on each sale. In some cases, the reason that these products pay such a high percentage is the fact that they do not sell that often. This high percentage is an attempt to compensate affiliates for that shortcoming. The percentage payout is the last thing an affiliate should consider when choosing products. Never base your decision to sell a product based solely on the commission it pays.

Affiliate products should be selected based on the niche you participate in. If your website is about birds, you should sell (and advertise) nothing but bird related products. The reason for this is simple. Your site will naturally attract people who are interested in birds. And these visitors are obviously interested in bird related products. Your bird related products will sell quite well while that foreign exchange program that pays 75% will do nothing.

The other mistake that people make is in joining too many programs. They believe that if one program is good, ten is better. The problem with this is that fact that you spread your marketing efforts too thin. Trying to market ten different products at once is difficult even for a veteran marketer, it is impossible for someone just starting out. You are much better off starting out with one or two related products in your niche and marketing them effectively everyday. By doing this, you will slowly begin to make more and more money.

If a product is paying a 75% commission, there is probably a reason for it. Many times, the reason is that the product does not convert well and sells infrequently. This promise of a high commission percentage is an attempt to convince the affiliate to promote it even if it doesn’t sell well. Never choose affiliat6e products on the commission they pay.  In fact, the commission should be the last thing you take into consideration.

The affiliate products you choose to promote should be closely related to the content in your website. For example, if your website is about birds you should try to sell or advertise only bird related products. The reason for this is simple. The people who visit your website are probably interested in birds. Very few merchants are nice guys and just want you to make money. In most cases, affiliate products that give away a very high percentage of the purchase price do so because these products don’t sell well.

So, would you rather earn $100 every few months, or would you prefer to make $10 a day?  If you are any good at math, you’ll take the $10 a day. Steer clear of those high percentage affiliate products and focus on making consistent sales. You will make a lot more money in the long run.

Also, don’t select an affiliate product to sell on a whim. I’ve fallen prey to this myself. You hear about a hot new product that is getting some buzz online, and instead of considering all the facts, you just rush in and start promoting. This is almost always a mistake. Only promote products that are closely related to the content of your site.

And last but not the least; don’t try to sell too many affiliate products at one time. Get your hands on just one or two good items that are related to your niche and promote them heavily. Only as you begin to generate some profits, should you add another product. Using these techniques, you will slowly but surely increase the amount of earnings you produce from affiliate products.

Sell only products that are related to your niche. If your website is about exotic birds, most of your site visitors are probably interested in birds. Products having to do with breeding birds, birdhouses, making money with exotic birds, and buying exotic birds at a discount are all products that would do well. Most of your visitors would not be interested in music CD’s, knitting products or cat supplies.

Place ads for the affiliate products that you are promoting on every page of your site. This is an important tactic to be a successful affiliate marketer. If your affiliate program offers free ads and banners, take advantage of them. If not, develop your own ads that match the look of your site. It’s really easy to do.

Develop a list. This is vitally important to your future income. A good list can triple your income over the long term. If your affiliate merchant provides a free promotional report, offer it as a free bonus when people subscribe to your list. If not, develop your own free report. It doesn’t have to be long, 5 to 10 pages is fine. Just make sure you include valuable information along with a number of ads and links to your site and affiliate products.

And finally: Market your list, market you site, and market you affiliate products. This is the probably the most tactic that can improve your affiliate income. With traffic, you have no business. You can use a number of different marketing techniques. Write articles, place free ads, place paid ads, use solo, ezine and classified ads, email, ppc and as many other different marketing techniques as you can think of. By using a diversified approach, you can determine which sources work best for you. Then focus on those methods that perform the best.

If you don’t cloak your affiliate links, you are probably losing a considerable amount of money every month. Statistical records indicate that the theft of affiliate sales accounts for over a quarter of total affiliate revenues. I find that figure incredible. I never realized that there were so many dishonest thieves lurking around. Oh well, it is what it is.

So how do they do it? Well it’s actually pretty simple, they’re thieves,  not brain surgeons. They access the source code of your webpage to get the address of your affiliate link. Then they copy that information and create a new URL by replacing your affiliate ID with their own.

Then they visit this new URL and buy the product using their own affiliate ID. As a result, you’ve done all the hard work of finding the product, doing the research, and perhaps developing a pre-sale page and these dishonest thieves reap all the benefits.  

And the problem is; if you don’t research your site statistics everyday, you may not even know that these thieves are eating up your hard earned money! So the next big question is, what can you do about it? There are two possible solutions; you can cloak your affiliate links or use software to hide them. The software solution is more foolproof, but a good cloaking strategy will thwart all but the most determined thieves.

So, if you are not doing it on a consistent basis, research your site statistics and determine the extent of your affiliate thefts. If the number is small (or non-existent), cloaking may work fine for you. On the other hand, if thieves are consistently stealing your affiliate links, you may need a software solution. There is plenty of software available online and some of it is quite reasonably priced.

So, to survive in the affiliate business and make money, do what you can to put these thieves out of business.
